In 1601, while His Majesty (King James V1) was in the inner house of the tollbooth of Edinburgh, sitting with the Lords in the administration of justice, some hot language passed between John Dundas and James Hamilton and Dundas "without regard to the place or His Majesty's presence" struck Hamilton. For this offence he was warded in the Castle of Edinburgh, but freed on bond for £2000 Scots, by James Dalzell, merchant and burgess of Edinburgh, on condition that he "repair to his lodging in the Burgh and remain there until he satisfies the King's will for the offence committed."
