The 8th Earl Fitzwilliam William Henry Laurence Peter Wentworth Fitzwilliam was killed in a flying accident in the South of France in 1948, whilst eloping with the Countess of Hartington; Kathleen Kennedy, the eldest sister of the future President Kennedy. With no direct male heir, Wentworth Woodhouse's contents were sold and the ownership split. From 1950, it was let to local councils as a training college, with Fitzwilliams occupying the remainder until 1979, when the 10th and last Earl died. After his death the title passed to his second cousin, once removed Eric Spencer Wentworth-FitzWilliam, 9th Earl FitzWilliam.

The 8th Earl Fitzwilliam was married to Olive ('Obby') Dorothea Plunket, the daughter of the Bishop of Ormonde, with whom he had one daughter, Juliet.
